The Unjust Judge and the Persistent Widow

This meditation is based on a passage for November 19, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 18:1-8

Reflection and Question: This story was the Sunday Gospel lesson on the weekend when the 33 Chilean miners were rescued from their hole after 67 days a half mile underground. It was probably common across the world for preachers to offer those miners as a modern example of the persistent widow here. I cherish a different example: the LGBT Presbyterians who have been knocking at the door for 36 years, imploring the church to acknowledge their baptism in Christ and use their gifts. Jesus’ story here sustains my knocking. For what justice are you crying out to God?

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, we thank You for this encouragement to pray always and not to lose heart. We trust Your assurance that God will grant justice to those who cry out day and night. We will continue in prayer so that You will find faith on earth. Amen.
